Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt
Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Anna Eleanor Roosevelt were one of the first defining “power couples” in national American politics. His sweeping vision rescued the United States from the worst economic depression in its history and led it through World War II. She became a model of the modern First Lady, with a life and a mind of her own. Many of today’s national institutions were founded during his administration, including the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Commission (FDIC). While he was the nation’s leader, she became its heart and its people’s advocate, supporting equal rights for women and minorities at a time when doing so was neither popular nor easy. Together, they transformed the nation and its future.
